About St Mary's Church, Tenby
St Mary’s Church, Tenby stands in the town centre and serves both the urban parish of St Mary In Liberty and the rural parish of St Mary Out Liberty to the north. An active Anglican parish church, it was designated Grade I in 1951 for its outstanding medieval architecture, roofs and monuments.
A place of worship is thought to have occupied the site from the Norman period. Parts of the present chancel survive from the 13th century, although much of the structure belongs to the 15th century. Its panelled wagon ceiling has 75 carved bosses depicting plants, fish, grotesque figures, a mermaid and a green man, alongside religious imagery. The late 13th-century tower retains a former upper chapel with a stone altar and piscina. Later additions include St Thomas’ Chapel, St Nicholas’ Chapel and the spire. Notable furnishings include two fonts and a 15th-century bell inscribed “Sancta Anna”, while memorials commemorate figures including the Tudor-era mayors Thomas and John White and mathematician Robert Recorde.
