About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is a Church of England parish church in Cardigan, Ceredigion. It has served the parish formally since 1428, following the loss of Holy Trinity Church, and remains in use as part of the Bro Teifi united benefice. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Founded in the 12th century, the church belonged to the medieval Benedictine priory at Cardigan while also serving local parishioners. Much of the present structure dates to the 14th century, although extensive rebuilding followed. A sealed southern doorway may once have connected with the priory complex. The porch was reconstructed in 1639, while the tower was rebuilt between its collapse in 1705 and completion in 1748. The chancel’s east window, added in 1924, portrays the Crucifixion alongside the Virgin Mary and St John; pieces of 15th-century glass remain in its upper tracery. A tablet commemorates Royal Navy hospital inspector Dr David Rowlands, who died in 1846.
