About Our Lady of Cardigan

Our Lady of Cardigan is a Roman Catholic church in Cardigan, Ceredigion, and the home of Wales’s national Catholic shrine. Its bronze figure of the Virgin Mary, created by Sister Concordia Scott, holds a candle blessed in Rome by Pope John Paul II. The shrine attracts pilgrims each year and was associated with Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Westminster Cathedral in 2010.

The devotion has medieval origins. Tradition records that an image of Mary and the Christ Child, holding a lit candle, was discovered near the River Teifi and eventually housed in a purpose-built shrine. The medieval figure is thought to have been removed to London and destroyed in 1538 under Thomas Cromwell’s orders. A replacement was commissioned in 1952, blessed in Westminster and carried through the Diocese of Menevia before reaching Cardigan. In 1966 it was transferred to the newly consecrated church. Scott’s bronze version followed in 1986, after a journey around Wales, and was installed in the presence of 4,500 pilgrims.
