About Tabernacl Chapel
Tabernacl Chapel is a Congregational church on Cowell Street in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. This Grade II* listed building is recognised for its distinctive and highly elaborate design, including the historic railings and two pairs of iron gates facing the street.
The congregation was formed when Capel Als could no longer hold everyone attending, particularly those living in western Llanelli. A foundation stone was placed in 1873 on land given by Sir John Stepney, and the church opened at Easter in 1875. Designed by John Humphrey, its temple-like frontage blends classical and medieval influences, with arches, a portico, varied windows and bands of stone. Inside are a plaster ceiling with sweeping ribs, a curved gallery with walnut veneer, and an intricately fretted pulpit. An organ gallery behind the pulpit received a Vowles instrument in 1901. A memorial stained-glass window commemorates members who died during the First World War.
