About Eglwys Gymun Church
Eglwys Gymun Church is the parish church of Eglwyscummin in south-west Carmarthenshire, Wales. It remains a place of parish worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building, a status awarded in 1966 for its medieval character, later restoration and notable interior.
The site may have been founded by Saint Cynin during the fifth century, and an inscribed stone from that period was discovered in the circular churchyard. The surviving fabric is medieval, with origins extending to at least the thirteenth century and substantial work from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Restorations took place in 1878 and around 1900, with repairs completed in 1901. The small church has a vaulted nave and porch, an eighteenth-century roof, stained glass, and an imposing carved oak altar with fittings installed in 1882. A fourteenth-century effigy of Margaret Marloes was moved indoors from the churchyard in 1902 to protect it from further erosion.
