About Penuel Baptist Chapel

Penuel Baptist Chapel stands on Priory Street in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire. This Grade II listed building, with an adjoining schoolroom, ceased operating as a Baptist place of worship in July 2024. It reopened that October as Rowtons’ Museum, devoted to paranormal and spiritual subjects. The building also accommodates independent multi-faith worship and weekly meetings for meditation and spiritual conversation.

The congregation began in 1757, initially meeting across the street, and its present site was acquired in 1786. The chapel was enlarged in 1797, then reconstructed in 1817 and 1851–52. George Morgan of Carmarthen designed the schoolroom, added in 1886. Extensive work in 1909–10 retained little beyond the earlier walls and roof. The broad, classically styled interior has four galleries with curved corners, timber supports and balustraded fronts. Canadian redwood seating, the galleries and the organ largely belong to that renovation, while an arcaded classical pulpit stands beneath the organ recess.
