About St Martin's Church

St Martin’s Church stands on Albany Road in the Roath district of Cardiff. It is an Anglican parish church and is recognised as a National Monument of Wales.

The congregation was established in 1886 for the developing suburb and initially met in a temporary metal church. The current structure opened in 1901, with an independent parish formed in 1903. During the First World War, a Belgian artist decorated the former lady chapel to thank local worshippers for their support. Fire caused by a bomb devastated the interior in February 1941. Until reconstruction was finished in 1955, services took place in the choir vestry and at nearby St Cyprian’s. The rebuilding introduced simpler lancet-shaped windows, allowing more daylight into the interior. A cloister facing Albany Road was dedicated in 2011. Two years later, a Christ Pantocrator mosaic created by Aidan Hart was added over the principal entrance and blessed by former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.
