About St Andrew's Church, Wood Walton
St Andrew’s Church, Wood Walton is a redundant Anglican church in a secluded field setting around two kilometres north of Wood Walton, Cambridgeshire. The Grade II* listed building is now cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches and is no longer included on the Heritage at Risk Register.
A church was documented here in 1086, while the present building dates largely from the medieval period and is recorded as built in 1301. The south aisle was added around 1250, followed by work to the north aisle and chancel in about 1330. Built of limestone rubble with dressed stone details and tiled roofs, it has a clerestoried nave, aisles, chancel, porch and three-stage western tower. Victorian restoration included rebuilding the aisle walls, tower and porch. Inside are contrasting medieval arcades, Hussey family memorials and early stone coffin covers. Four bells remain in the tower, while medieval glass depicting Saints Catherine and Lawrence is held by the Stained Glass Museum in Ely.
