About St James' Church, Stretham, Cambridgeshire
St James’ Church, Stretham, serves as an active Church of England parish church in the Cambridgeshire village of Stretham. It forms part of the Ely Team Ministry, which brings together eight local churches, and has shared an ecumenical arrangement with Stretham’s Methodist congregation since 1990. Its Grade II* designation reflects its special architectural and historic interest.
Christian worship on the site is documented from the twelfth century, and early stonework remains within the chancel’s east end. Most of the fabric is medieval, largely dating from the fourteenth century. The tower is faced with dressed stone and carries a clock installed in 1876 by JB Joyce & Co. That year, James Piers St Aubyn undertook substantial alterations, including new transepts, a south aisle, clerestory and porch. Inside are a carved fifteenth-century chancel screen, several historic memorials and an 1886 organ by J W Walker and Sons. The six bells are arranged for change ringing.
