About Church of St Thomas à Becket
The Church of St Thomas à Becket is an active Church of England parish church in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire. It serves a parish within a benefice shared with Upwood and Great and Little Raveley, and holds Grade I listed status.
Dating from about 1180–90, the church began as part of Ramsey Abbey, perhaps serving as a hospital, infirmary or guest accommodation. Its long, aisled hall and compact vaulted chancel reflect this probable original use. It became Ramsey’s parish church around 1222. Rubble stone forms much of the structure, with dressed stone used for the aisles and other sections. The medieval arcades have varied piers and carved capitals, while the aisles were largely rebuilt around 1500. A western tower was added in 1672. Restoration in 1844 removed some historic glass and the chancel screen, and the north vestry was constructed in 1910.
