About St Andrew's Church

St Andrew’s Church, in Buckland and Chipping, Hertfordshire, is an Anglican place of worship no longer used for regular services. It occupies raised ground east of the A10, on the route linking Royston with Buntingford. Protected at Grade II*, the church is now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust.

The chancel and nave originated around 1348, with the western tower completed roughly half a century later. The southern aisle and porch were constructed during the later 1400s. Flint walls, stone trim and roofs covered in red tiles characterise the exterior, while the tower has battlements and a short pyramid-shaped spire. Repairs and alterations occurred in 1848, 1875, around 1880 and 1893. Interior details include a fifteenth-century wooden aisle ceiling enriched with leafy bosses, surviving medieval glazing and memorials spanning several centuries. Brasses from the later 1400s stand behind the altar, and an 1870 Henry Jones and Son organ has one manual.
