About St Mary's Church, Huntingdon
St Mary’s Church, Huntingdon is a Church of England place of worship in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. Traditionally regarded as the town’s mother church, it stands on the probable former site of an Augustinian priory established by Eustace de Lovetot in 1140. The building has held Grade I listed status since 1951.
After the earlier structure collapsed in July 1607, work on the present church began in March 1608 and was completed in 1620. Its mainly Perpendicular Gothic design comprises a chancel, nave with aisles, south porch and west tower, with pinnacles, panelled buttresses and niches. Earlier Gothic fabric survives in parts of the chancel and several piers. The octagonal font dates from the Early English period, while other features include a stone pulpit and memorials to the De Carcassonett family and Crimean War dead. A vestry and organ chamber were added in 1869, followed by restoration in 1876, when oak seating, an east window and eight bells were installed.
