About St. Martins Church

St. Martins Church is an active Church of England parish church in Knebworth, Hertfordshire. It holds Grade II* listed status, recognising its particular architectural and historic importance.

Edwin Lutyens designed the brick church in an Italianate manner for the growing community around the Great North Road and Knebworth station, some distance from the medieval parish church. Work started in 1914, but wartime economies meant that the building remained unfinished when consecrated in 1915. Sir Albert Richardson designed the west front added during the 1960s, omitting the portico envisaged by Lutyens. Inside, plasterwork is complemented by restrained Portland stone detailing, while Tuscan columns and compact arches divide the nave from the aisles. A Willis organ was also installed in the 1960s, replacing an earlier instrument.
