About Church of St Andrew
The Church of St Andrew is an active Church of England parish church in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. Dedicated to St Andrew in 1490, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Its registers record baptisms, marriages and burials from 1561, with only a break between 1696 and 1708.
The oldest fabric probably dates from the 12th century and survives in the lower tower and substantial nave walls. During the 13th century, the building was reconstructed with a slender southern aisle and an early chancel containing lancet windows. Later medieval work raised the pebble and rubble west tower, broadened the aisles and arches, and added battlements, stone buttresses and gargoyles carved with faces. Nineteenth-century restoration provided the existing roofs and south porch, while also enlarging the eastern window. Other details include medieval sundials, a blocked lancet showing the earlier aisle width, and traces of a steeper former nave roof.
