About St James' Church

St James’ Church is a historic Church of England place of worship in Rudry, Caerphilly, within the Diocese of Monmouth. Designated Grade II in 1963, the church has longstanding connections with the village and preserves parish registers dating from 1627.

Its origins lie in the mid-13th century, possibly around 1254, when it may have served pilgrims as a roadside shrine. A church existed here by 1295 and functioned as a chapel linked to St Barrwg’s in Bedwas until Rudry became separate in 1914. John Prichard restored the building in 1885, and its tower underwent refurbishment in the early 2010s. William Price, later known as an archdruid and advocate of cremation, was baptised here in 1800. The churchyard contains memorials for two First World War soldiers, while its war memorial and three Moses family chest tombs are also Grade II listed.
