Saint John the Baptist Church is an Anglican church serving Newton in Porthcawl, within Bridgend, Wales. Standing on Church Street, this medieval place of worship belongs to the Church of England and is designated Grade I for its special architectural and historic importance.
The present building is thought to have originated during the 1180s, shortly before the appointment of a rector in 1189. Jasper Tudor, Duke of Bedford, oversaw improvements in the late fifteenth century. Changes during 1825–27 included work to the pulpit and a new vestry, while further conservation was undertaken in 1860–61. An organ space followed in 1885, with later projects renewing floors, roofing and chancel seating. Grey rubble walls, contrasting dressed masonry and slate roofing characterise the exterior. The prominent western tower features broad corner supports, a saddleback roof, battlemented parapets, a clock and a decorative doorway. Above is a carved face traditionally said to represent the church’s patron saint.
