About St Illtyd's Church
St Illtyd’s Church is a former Church of England place of worship in Abertillery, Blaenau Gwent. Now deconsecrated, it is protected at Grade II* and is regarded as the county borough’s earliest surviving structure. The building belongs to Blaenau Gwent Borough Council, which has made it structurally safe. Visitors can enter, and occasional community events are held there.
Christian worship on the site predates the Norman period, and a ninth- or tenth-century poem refers to a church here. The Cistercians are thought to have reconstructed it late in the twelfth century. Its western saddleback tower and barrel-shaped roofs point to another substantial phase around 1500, followed by renovation between 1888 and 1891. Mining-related subsidence caused closure in the 1930s; repairs allowed reopening in 1943. Opencast working prompted a further closure in 1957, which became permanent after additional deterioration was discovered.
