About Old Church of St Nicholas
The Old Church of St Nicholas occupies a hilltop at Uphill, within Weston-super-Mare in Somerset. It looks towards Weston Bay, Brean Down and the Axe estuary. Now partly a ruin, the church is protected at Grade II* and maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. Regular worship moved elsewhere in 1846, although the enclosed chancel sometimes hosts services.
Built in 1001, the stone structure displays Norman work alongside changes made towards the end of the medieval era. A chancel and centrally placed tower of three stages remain, while the nave has stood uncovered since 1879, when its hazardous roof was taken down. After its condition deteriorated, another church was erected beside Uphill Manor in 1844; both served the congregation briefly before worship transferred entirely to the newer building. The porch was renewed in 1904. Among the surviving details are three incised sundials, including an especially early example above a window on the tower’s southern side, possibly dating from the transition between Saxon and Norman periods.
