About Saint John the Evangelist, Boxmoor
Saint John the Evangelist, Boxmoor is an Anglican parish church serving Boxmoor in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. It shares the wider parish with St Stephen’s at Chaulden and St Francis’ at Boxmoor. Consecrated in 1874, the church received Grade II protection in 1977.
Richard Norman Shaw conceived the building in a Gothic Revival design. Its fabric combines irregularly coursed rubble with finely cut stone detailing beneath a simple tile covering. Above the nave stands an eight-sided bell turret, while pointed lancet windows and quatrefoil-shaped supports define the interior. An expansion completed in 1893 increased accommodation to 850. Decorative elements include ten windows containing stained, painted or dalle-de-verre glass, together with a 1908 Last Supper painting behind the altar. A substantial brass memorial recalls the Mitchell-Innes family. The present Nicholson pipe organ was installed in 2011 after structural work associated with the replacement hall had worsened problems affecting its predecessor.
