Also known as the Auld Kirk, the church holds Category A listed status, recognising its architectural and historic importance. It remains part of the town’s Church of Scotland heritage and occupies a prominent High Street setting.

The church was dedicated in 1793, placing its origins in the closing years of the eighteenth century. Its principal later addition is the present steeple, which was finished in 1834. The steeple was the work of Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham and forms the most notable documented feature of the building. Together, the late eighteenth-century dedication and early nineteenth-century steeple mark the main stages recorded in the church’s development.
