About St Athernase
St Athernase stands in Leuchars, Fife, and serves as an active parish church within the Church of Scotland. The church has Category A listed status, recognising its architectural and historic importance. Although its familiar dedication derives from a nineteenth-century misunderstanding, the building continues to be known by this name.
The oldest surviving sections are the twelfth-century chancel and semicircular apse. Their Romanesque exterior is enriched with decorative blind arcading and rounded Norman-style arches. In 1185, Ness, son of William and Lord of Leuchars, granted the church to the canons at St Andrews. A belfry was installed around 1700, while the nave underwent restoration in 1858. Inside are a fragment of a ninth-century carved cross-slab discovered near Leuchars and three ornate sixteenth-century memorial stones commemorating the Bruce family of Earlshall. One depicts a woman at full length and provides evidence of clothing from the period.
