The Presbyterian family across the UK
- Church of Scotland. The national church, with congregations in nearly every Scottish community. See our dedicated guide to the Church of Scotland.
- Presbyterian Church in Ireland. The largest Protestant denomination in Northern Ireland, with over 500 congregations, strongest in Antrim, Down and the Belfast area. Evangelical in tone, with strong congregational life and youth work.
- Free Church of Scotland. A confessional, growing church rooted in the Highlands and Islands, now planting in Scottish cities. Worship is simple and word-centred; some congregations sing psalms unaccompanied.

What Presbyterian means in practice
The name comes from the Greek presbyteros, elder. Each congregation is led by a minister and a body of elders, the session. Congregations send representatives to a regional presbytery, and the denomination meets in a general assembly. This structure, inherited from the Reformation in Geneva and Scotland, aims at accountable, shared leadership: no single leader owns the church. Presbyterian theology is Reformed, historically expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith, with a high view of Scripture, God's sovereignty and grace.
What a service is like
- Word-centred. The sermon is the heart of the service, usually 20 to 35 minutes of careful Bible exposition.
- Sung praise. Hymns and psalms, accompanied by organ or band depending on the congregation. Metrical psalms are a distinctive Presbyterian treasure.
- Ordered and unfussy. Prayers are led from the front, the liturgy is simple, and the tone is reverent without ceremony.
- Communion. Usually celebrated monthly or quarterly, and taken seriously; most churches welcome believers from other denominations at the table.
- Timing. Main services are typically at 10, 10:30 or 11am, with many congregations also holding an evening service, a habit that has survived better among Presbyterians than most.

What is the difference between Presbyterian and Reformed?
Reformed describes the theology; Presbyterian describes the eldership-based governance. Presbyterian churches are Reformed, and continental Reformed churches share the theology with slightly different structures. In Britain the terms are close to interchangeable. Is worship formal?
Restrained rather than formal. Dress is ordinary in most congregations, though Free Church and some Northern Irish congregations lean smarter. Visitors are welcomed without fuss, which many people find a relief.
