About St George's Church, Worcester
St George’s Church, Worcester, is an active Roman Catholic parish church in Worcester, Worcestershire. The Grade II* listed building is now under the care of the Archdiocese of Birmingham, following its transfer from the Society of Jesus in 1990.
The present Baroque church, designed by Henry Rowe, was opened by Bishop Thomas Walsh in 1829, replacing an earlier church erected on the site a century before. It was enlarged in 1880, and S. J. Nicoll raised the frontage in 1887. A substantial copy of Raphael’s *Transfiguration*, given by the 16th Earl of Shrewsbury in 1837, stands behind the altar. The organ dates from 1885, when Edward Elgar succeeded his father as organist, having served as his assistant since the age of 15. Nicholson & Co of Worcester rebuilt the instrument in 1970, marking surviving older stops to identify those used by Elgar.
