The Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Mary, the Virgin of Worcester stands in College Yard, Worcester. This Church of England cathedral serves as the Bishop of Worcester’s seat and the principal church of the diocese. Governed by the dean and chapter, it is protected as a Grade I listed building and forms part of a scheduled monument.
Founded in 680, the cathedral preserves an eleventh-century crypt from Bishop Wulfstan’s Romanesque rebuilding. Its chapter house followed around 1120, while the nave was lengthened later that century. The eastern section was reconstructed in Early English Gothic form between 1224 and 1269, with further work on the nave during the 1360s. The central tower was finished in 1374. Extensive restoration took place during the nineteenth century, when George Gilbert Scott designed furnishings for the interior. Surviving features include medieval misericords incorporated into Victorian choir seating and memorials to King John, Arthur, Prince of Wales, and Stanley Baldwin.
