About St John's Church, Kidderminster

St John’s Church, Kidderminster serves a Church of England parish in the Worcestershire town of Kidderminster. Dating from the nineteenth century, it is recognised for its architectural and historic significance with Grade II listed status.

George Alexander designed the first building, which was erected during 1842 and 1843 and became known in the area as the Black Church. In 1867, St John’s gained a parish formed from the territory of St Mary and All Saints. J. A. Chatwin oversaw extensive reconstruction between 1892 and 1904, preserving the tower and spire from Alexander’s building. Bishop of Worcester Charles Gore formally dedicated the rebuilt church on 13 February 1904. Nicholson and Co. of Worcester supplied its organ in 1909. During alterations undertaken in 1972, rooms for parish use were formed in the nave and the organ was transferred to a position above the refectory at the western end.
