About Gadfield Elm Chapel - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Historical Site

Gadfield Elm Chapel - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Historical Site stands on Mill Lane, near Pendock in Worcestershire. Now cared for by the denomination as a heritage attraction, it is its earliest chapel known to remain standing. Visitors may enter without charge.

The building dates from 1836, when it was erected for the United Brethren, dissident Primitive Methodists guided by Thomas Kington. Following Wilford Woodruff’s preaching in 1840, 599 members of the 600-strong group embraced the Latter-day Saint faith. Kington and John Benbow then conveyed the property to the denomination. It became an important local gathering place, hosting conferences and an address by Brigham Young. The church disposed of it in 1842 to raise money for British members travelling to America. After decades in private ownership, a preservation trust bought it in 1994 and undertook its restoration. Dedications followed in 2000 and, after ownership passed back to the denomination, in 2004.
