St James is the principal Church of England parish church in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. Standing on Church Street, it remains an active place of worship and a prominent local landmark. The church has held Grade I listed status since 1950.
The present church was established outside Trowbridge Castle around 1200 as the town expanded, replacing an earlier stone building. Much of its surviving medieval fabric dates from alterations in the 14th century and a substantial rebuilding begun around 1450. Built of stone in the Gothic tradition, it is chiefly Perpendicular in character, with broad windows, battlements, pinnacles and a slender 49-metre spire. Its nave has wide arcades and an ornate plaster ceiling, while fan vaulting appears beneath the tower and in the north porch. Extensive restoration was completed in 1848. Following a nave fire in 1986 and storm damage to the spire in 1990, the building was repaired again. Its tower contains twelve bells cast in 1934.
