St Thomas & St Edmund is an active Church of England parish church in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Situated on St Thomas’s Square near the market place, it is designated Grade I for its exceptional historic and architectural importance. The present parish dates from 1974, when those of St Thomas and St Edmund were joined. Worship takes place on Sundays at 8:00 am.
A timber chapel was probably established on the site around 1219 for workers constructing Salisbury Cathedral. It was soon succeeded by a stone church, dedicated to Thomas Becket by 1238. Following the chancel’s collapse in 1447, wealthy local traders helped fund substantial enlargement and reconstruction. The southern tower, built over a porch, has battlements and a pyramid-shaped roof, adopted after plans for a masonry spire were halted because the structure leaned. Notable interior features include angel carvings on the medieval roofs and a Doom scene over the chancel opening. Eight bells hang in the tower, while the organ was transferred from Salisbury Cathedral in 1877.
