About St Giles
St Giles stands in the deserted village of Imber in Wiltshire, within the British Army’s Salisbury Plain training grounds. This Church of England church is listed at Grade I and is no longer used as a parish church. It has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust since 2005, while access remains limited to dates authorised by the Ministry of Defence.
Constructed from dressed limestone around the end of the 13th century or beginning of the 14th, the church replaced an earlier building dating from the 1100s. Its aisles and tower, crowned by five pinnacles, were added during the 14th century. Substantial rebuilding took place in the 19th century, followed by restoration completed in 2009 after lightning damaged the tower. Medieval wall paintings survive, alongside 17th-century bell-ringing patterns depicted inside the tower. Six bells were installed in 2010.
