About Parish Church of St. James Wetherby
The Parish Church of St. James Wetherby is an active Church of England parish church on Church Street in Wetherby, West Yorkshire. It serves the parish of Wetherby with Linton and is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Wetherby had earlier chapels, but the present church was begun in 1839 and consecrated by the Bishop of Ripon in 1842. Built with stone quarried at nearby Collingham, its sandstone nave and tall two-stage western tower reflect the Gothic Revival. The tower has clock faces on three sides and louvred openings for the belfry; unsafe pinnacles were replaced with capstones in 1939. A chancel was added during refurbishment in 1877, while a porch and wheelchair ramp followed in the 1990s. Notable details include an elaborate five-light stained-glass east window, a rose window on the south side, a painted panelled chancel ceiling and furnishings made by Robert Thompson.
