About Westgate Unitarian Chapel
Westgate Unitarian Chapel is a historic place of worship near central Wakefield in West Yorkshire. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building, a designation awarded in 1971. The congregation became part of the Unitarian movement during the late eighteenth century.
Its origins date to 1697, when followers of the ejected minister Joshua Kirkby joined nonconformists from Alverthorpe to establish a Presbyterian chapel between their communities. The present brick building replaced that first chapel in 1752. Arranged across two floors and three bays, it follows the Doric style and is topped by a cupola, while Venetian windows distinguish the lower level. The restrained interior contains a pulpit made in 1737 and transferred from the earlier chapel, alongside an organ dating from 1847. Much of its timberwork was installed in the later nineteenth century. Catacombs lie beneath the building and are sometimes accessible to visitors.
