About St Austin's RC Church
St Austin’s RC Church serves Roman Catholics in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, close to the city centre at Northgate and Marsh Way. It forms a parish with English Martyrs Church and is cared for by the Diocese of Leeds, which assumed responsibility from the Jesuits in 1931. The historic building is protected with a Grade II designation.
Architect Joseph Ireland drew up the scheme in 1824. A Jesuit mission began locally in 1826, followed by the community’s foundation in 1827 and completion of the building in 1828. As the Catholic congregation grew, alterations in 1852 provided additional length and an upper gallery. Further work in the following two decades took over space formerly occupied by the presbytery after the priest’s residence moved elsewhere. In 1878, Joseph Hansom designed a new Lady Chapel.
