About Church of St John the Baptist
The Church of St John the Baptist is an active Church of England parish church in central Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Standing within the tree-lined grounds of St John’s Square, it is the smaller of the city centre’s two Anglican churches. It has held Grade II* listed status since 29 March 1971 in recognition of its architectural importance.
Built from 1791 to 1795 to plans by Charles Watson, the church formed the focal point of a Georgian development north of the city centre. Its classical exterior is constructed from ashlar sandstone, with slate roofing over the nave and aisles. John Thomas Micklethwaite designed a replacement five-stage western tower and internal changes in 1885, followed by an extension in 1905. Notable details include the tower’s octagonal upper stage and domed roof, surviving early pews, stained glass from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wall memorials, an organ loft and a war memorial commemorating Wrenthorpe Colliery workers killed during the First World War.
