About Unitarian Church
The Unitarian Church stands on Honey Hole Road in Todmorden, West Yorkshire. This Grade I listed place of worship is cared for by the Historic Chapels Trust. It closed in 1987, but regular services resumed in 2008. The building is also licensed for weddings and remains associated with the British Unitarian movement.
Todmorden’s Unitarians established an earlier chapel and school in 1823. Their present church, designed by John Gibson, was begun in 1865 and completed four years later as a memorial to mill owner, reformer and MP John Fielden. Built of stone beneath a slate roof, it has a Gothic design with a seven-bay aisled nave, transepts, chancel and a tower crowned by an octagonal spire. Notable details include Devonshire marble columns, Belgian stained glass illustrating Christ’s life, carved seating, marble fittings and eight bells cast in 1868. Following closure and deterioration, an extensive restoration repaired the roofs, glazing, clock and bells, while also renewing the tower interior and lodge.
