About Parish Church of St Peter
The Parish Church of St Peter serves an active Church of England parish in central Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Standing on Kirkgate, close to Southgate, the church holds Grade II* listed status. Regular worship includes Holy Communion, Sung Eucharist, daily prayer and choral or contemplative evening services.
A church has occupied the site since the eleventh century, traditionally linked to Walter de Lacy, and a replacement was built during the sixteenth century. Rapid growth in industrial-era Huddersfield eventually left that building both inadequate and in poor repair. James Pigott Pritchett designed the present church, constructed between 1834 and 1836 using bricks salvaged from its predecessor. Later additions included two octagonal vestries, stained glass by Thomas Willement and an organ made by Huddersfield firm Conacher and Co. Ninian Comper designed the east window and baldachin as elements of a war memorial installed during the 1920s. Repairs to the roof, ceiling and tower were undertaken around 2012.
