About Lawrence Batley Theatre
Lawrence Batley Theatre stands in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Although now used as a venue for drama, music, dance and comedy, the building began life as a Methodist place of worship. It takes its present name from a Huddersfield businessman and philanthropist who established a national cash-and-carry company.
Built in 1819 as Queen Street Chapel, it opened on 9 July that year and could hold around 3,000 worshippers. Its designer is not recorded, though Joseph Kaye, later associated with Huddersfield railway station, served as chief mason. The chapel became a Methodist mission in 1906, which relocated to King Street in 1970 after attendance fell. The building subsequently served as an arts centre, squash club, restaurant and disco. Kirklees Theatre Trust received approval to preserve and convert it in 1989, with construction beginning in September 1992 and lasting four years.
