About St Stephen's Church, Copley
St Stephen’s Church, Copley, is a former Anglican place of worship in Halifax, West Yorkshire. Set on a wooded slope overlooking the Calder Valley, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Industrialist Edward Akroyd commissioned the church in 1863, with William Henry Crossland responsible for its design. Built of stone beneath slate roofing, it has an aisled nave of five bays, a raised clerestory, an apsidal chancel, a southern porch and a northern chapel. A paired bellcote rises where the nave meets the chancel. Inside, wall paintings include saints in the chancel, while patterned decoration appears on the aisle ceilings. Mosaic work enriches both the pulpit and reredos, and stained glass fills the western window and apse openings. Hardman & Co designed the glass within the apse, and the organ occupies the northern transept.
