St Mary’s RC Church serves a Roman Catholic parish in Halifax, West Yorkshire. It stands at the junction of Gibbet Street and Clarence Street, close to Burdock Way, and remains a place of worship with Sunday Masses, including one celebrated in Polish. It was Halifax’s earliest Roman Catholic church to be constructed following the Reformation.
Plans and fundraising began in 1831, with the foundation stone placed in September 1836. The church opened in November 1839. After storm damage caused a partial collapse in October 1863, Ralph Nicholson oversaw repairs and enlargement. This work renewed the roof, arcades and some walls, while also adding a tower, and continued until November 1865. Clement Williams designed a further extension begun in 1923, increasing capacity from 380 to 900 people. The church reopened in November 1924, although building work carried on until 1926.
