About Serbian Orthodox Church, Halifax
Serbian Orthodox Church, Halifax is an Orthodox parish church in the Boothtown district of Halifax, West Yorkshire. Dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, it belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy serving Britain and Ireland. The property includes two halls for functions, parking and a vicarage.
The building was erected in 1871 for a Wesleyan Methodist congregation and ceased Methodist use in 1964. A section of Halifax’s Serbian community purchased the former church and Sunday school in 1965. Funded and carried out by the community, alterations made the interior suitable for Orthodox services and created a social centre downstairs. Bishop Dionisije Milivojević consecrated the church on 5 September 1965, with King Peter II Karađorđević present. This community had developed after Serbian prisoners of war and refugees settled locally during the 1940s.
