About Halifax Minster
Halifax Minster is the Church of England parish church serving Halifax in West Yorkshire. Dedicated in honour of St John the Baptist, it remains an active place of worship and received its minster designation in 2009. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
An earlier Norman church, probably established around 1120 by Cluniac monks from Lewes Priory, occupied the site. Parts of its masonry survive within the present church, which was largely constructed during the fifteenth century. The nave and chancel were finished by about 1450, while the tower took more than thirty years to build and remained unfinished in 1482. Two chapels were added by around 1530. Notable fittings include a medieval font cover, seventeenth-century enclosed pews and an organ made by John Snetzler in 1763. Surviving glass ranges from medieval fragments to Victorian and Edwardian windows, while monuments include the gravestone of diarist Anne Lister. Major internal restoration was undertaken in 1878 and 1879.
