About St Mary's Church
In Goldsborough, West Yorkshire, St Mary’s Church serves as the Church of England parish church. It is recognised as a Grade II listed building, reflecting its historic and architectural significance.
The earliest fabric dates from the 12th century, including the south doorway and possibly parts of the nave walls. Much of the remaining structure was added during the 13th and 14th centuries. Built in limestone and roofed with Westmorland slate, the church has a nave, chancel, two aisles and a three-stage western tower. The tower features buttresses, paired-light bell openings, gargoyles and a battlemented parapet. The Norman doorway is richly carved with zigzag and beak-head patterns. Restorations took place in 1750, funded by Ann and Elizabeth Byerley, and in 1859 under George Gilbert Scott. Inside are a Victorian chancel screen and sedilia, alongside two 14th-century monuments bearing knightly effigies.
