About Dewsbury Minster Church of All Saints
Dewsbury Minster Church of All Saints serves as a Church of England parish church in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. Standing beside Vicarage Road near the town centre, it has held Grade II* protection since 1949. Formerly known as Dewsbury Parish Church, it was granted minster status in 1994 and is among three West Yorkshire churches bearing that title.
Its fabric includes Saxon stonework in the nave and substantial medieval elements. The northern arcade was erected around 1220, followed by its southern counterpart later in the thirteenth century, while the nave roof belongs to the fifteenth century. A tower and northern aisle by John Carr were completed in about 1767. Alterations during 1884–88 brought additional space, new seating and the eastern window. In 1895 the southern aisle was replaced in Gothic Revival design. Notable fittings include a 1912 oak altarpiece carved with Christ and the apostles. The Black Tom bell is sounded every Christmas Eve, continuing a custom established in the fifteenth century.
