About Whitechapel Church, Cleckheaton
Whitechapel Church, Cleckheaton is a Church of England place of worship about half a mile north of Cleckheaton in West Yorkshire. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building and stands within a burial ground containing more than 1,000 graves, including war graves from both world wars.
Worship on the site dates from the Norman period, as shown by a font made no later than 1120 and decorated with carvings including a Sheela Na Gig. Originally known as Heaton Chapel, it served communities some distance from Birstall parish church. The site passed through Roman Catholic, Anglican, Puritan and Methodist use over the centuries. After an earlier building became ruinous, it was rebuilt around 1707; the present church followed in 1820. A damaged medieval grave slab associated with a Knight Hospitaller is preserved near the entrance.
