About St Matthew

St Matthew is a Church of England church on Church Street in Rastrick, Brighouse, West Yorkshire. It holds Grade II* listed status and is part of a local ecumenical partnership, shared by Anglicans and Methodists. Methodist services began here in 1969, a formal agreement followed in 1971, and the two traditions have worshipped as a single congregation since 2004.

Christian worship on the site dates from the 14th century, when a modest chapel serving the parish from Elland was established soon after the Black Death. That building was replaced in 1602. The present Georgian church was finished in 1797 and consecrated in April 1798. Victorian improvements included the first stained glass in 1867 and internal alterations led by William Swinden Barber from 1875. Further renovation took place in 1935, bringing a new altar, an east-wall frieze of prophets and apostles, and a painted chancel ceiling showing Christ in Majesty. Most of the windows contain Victorian glass.
