About Old St Matthew's Church, Lightcliffe
Old St Matthew’s Church, Lightcliffe, stands in Lightcliffe, near Brighouse in West Yorkshire. It is a former place of worship, now reduced to its surviving tower. The structure is protected as a Grade II listed building and has been preserved following proposals for complete demolition.
A chapel was established here in 1529, repaired after Reformation damage, and replaced in 1775 by a Neoclassical church designed by William Mallinson. After a newer church opened nearby in the late nineteenth century, the older building became a mortuary chapel. Storm damage, decay and vandalism eventually led to the main body being removed, while the tower was restored during the 1970s, with further work in 1990. Built from hammer-finished stone with dressed ashlar details, the square tower has round and circular windows and an octagonal cupola crowned by a ball finial. Inside are a stone bearing the date 1529, benefaction boards and an 1830 monument by Richard Westmacott.
