About St Patrick's Church, Bradford
St Patrick’s Church, Bradford is an active Roman Catholic place of worship in Bradford city centre, at the junction of Westgate and Sedgfield Terrace. Dating from 1853, it is the city’s earliest Catholic church that remains in use and is protected as a Grade II listed building. The neighbouring St Pio Friary houses Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, who minister to the congregation and run a soup kitchen locally.
Canon Thomas Harrison began securing the site in 1850, using an intermediary because of hostility towards Catholics in Bradford. Construction commenced in 1852 to plans by George Goldie, and Bishop John Briggs opened the church on 13 July 1853. It gained an independent parish in 1855. Interior decoration was finished during the 1860s, followed by a nearby presbytery in 1866 and a southern porch in 1869. After the building debt was cleared, Cardinal Michael Logue consecrated it on 11 July 1903. The interior was reordered between 1968 and 1972.
