About St Wilfrid's Chapel

On Rectory Lane at Church Norton, near Selsey, St Wilfrid’s Chapel stands beside Pagham Harbour, surrounded by its burial ground. This former Anglican place of worship was declared redundant by the Diocese of Chichester in 1990 and is now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. The building is listed at Grade I.

The chapel comprises the chancel left from Selsey’s former parish church, which was dedicated to St Peter. Constructed in the early 13th century, around 1250, it retains narrow lancet openings along its sides and a later east window in the Perpendicular Gothic tradition. In the 1860s, the nave and other sections were dismantled, with medieval fabric transferred to a new church nearer Selsey’s population centre. The remaining chancel was later given its present dedication, recalling St Wilfrid, who founded a religious community at Selsey in 681. It subsequently functioned as an additional local chapel.
