About St John the Baptist, Westbourne
St John the Baptist, Westbourne is an active Church of England parish church on Westbourne Road in Emsworth, West Sussex. Dedicated to John the Baptist and belonging to the Diocese of Chichester, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Regular worship includes communion, evening services and choral music.
Although earlier worship may have taken place nearby, the oldest surviving parts are from the early thirteenth century. The medieval building originally comprised a nave, two aisles and a chancel. Substantial work in the late fourteenth century enlarged it to its present dimensions, while early sixteenth-century alterations introduced the Perpendicular Gothic nave, slender columns, flatter arches, a north porch and the current west tower. A spire was added in 1770. Extensive restoration followed in 1865, when galleries, enclosed pews and flat ceilings were removed. Most of the stained glass dates from 1865 to 1912, while one south-aisle window incorporates older glass.
