About St Michael and All Angels
St Michael and All Angels is a Church of England parish church in Brighton, West Sussex. It remains the local parish church and is protected as a Grade II* listed building in recognition of its considerable historic and architectural interest.
A place of worship may have occupied the site by the 10th century, while masonry from the 11th century survives near the entrance. Much of the building was reconstructed across the 12th and 13th centuries. Built mainly of flint with stone detailing, it has a western tower and shingled spire, aisled nave, chancel and south chapel. Fire destroyed the nave and its roof in 1830, leading to a replacement with four bays and rounded arches. In 1941, an unexploded bomb severely damaged the tower. Its numbered stones and timbers were stored before architect John Denman carefully reconstructed it in 1949. Medieval features include 13th-century lancet windows and a 14th-century recess in the chancel.
