About St. John's in the Square
St. John’s in the Square is an Anglican parish church in Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands. Still serving the Church of England, it is protected at Grade II*, marking its notable historic and architectural significance.
Construction took place from 1758 until 1776, with the design attributed either to William Baker or Roger Eykyn. The Neo-Classical building stood within a square near what was then the town’s southern limit. Parliament approved its creation in 1755 after a prominent local campaign, prompted by Wolverhampton’s increasing population and limited Anglican provision. Originally established to provide extra accommodation for worshippers from St Peter’s Collegiate Church, it remained under that institution’s authority. The church also maintained the same high church character as St Peter’s. During the nineteenth century, legislation dissolved Wolverhampton’s unusual collegiate arrangements and transferred their property to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.
